Friday Wrap Up

Happy Friday Friends!

It’s crazy weather time here in SoCal.  To think, just last week for Thanksgiving we were playing around at the beach.  Now it’s all rainy, cloudy, yet oddly warm.  Mother Nature, you’re a goofy one ;-)

Anyhow, the detox I have been on this week has turned out to be surprisingly easy.  I don’t have amazing willpower or strength now, rather I have come down with a nasty cold.  Juices have really been the only thing I have wanted.  I guess being sick is a blessing in disguise making the cleanse so easy-peasy!

In all seriousness though, I have felt like crap all week.  Normally I don’t stress being sick, it happens to us all.  Being healthy isn’t about not getting sick, it’s about how well our bodies deal with sickness.  So again, I normally wouldn’t worry except tomorrow Erik and me are taking off to MEXICO with a small group of friends.  The last thing I want to do is be that sick sneezy, snotty (sorry for the visual) person on the plane, or be all sicky on the beach!!!

I have tried  so hard to get better…rest, vitamins, nutrients, etc., so I have faith I’ll kick it just in time (I’m thinking tonight pleeeease!!)  I wanted to share a couple of juice recipes that did make me feel loads better.

This one was spicy and helped clear my nose:

1.  4 carrots, 1 small beet, 1 apple, 1 large ginger knob, a handful of parsley, 1/2 cucumber

This next one is loaded with vitamins and gave me a lot of energy:

2.  A large handful of spinach, several large kale leaves, about 4 dandelion leaves, 1 lemon, 2 apples, 1 ginger knob, 1 cucumber

Well, these are just a couple of what has helped.  I made some of my other go to’s as well.  And of course I loaded up on lots of ginger and lemon teas, a special tincture my brother made me with reishi in it (how cute is he?!?!), and Echinacea drops in my water.  Lets hope this all helps.

Ok enough about me and my feeling sorry for myself being sick!  Hope you all have a wonderful, cozy, sick free weekend!!  I’ll be back late next week with some pics from MEXICO!!!

Until then this will be me ;-)

What do you guys do to take care of yourselves when you are sick??

Snaps! Bday Celebrations

Well, I have officially entered the last year of my twenties.  I seriously cannot believe it.  I still feel like I’m 23 (probably act like it too).  I can honestly say that every year thus far has been such a blessing and so amazing, the good has far outweighed the bad.  I am certain that 29 will be just as great :-)

I was fortunate enough to celebrate with good friends and family the past few days.  I enjoyed getting pampered by my mother and celebrating with some fun dinners out.  I finally got to try this vegetarian/vegan restaurant near my house that I have heard so much about Avanti Cafe.  The food was amazing, very fresh and natural.  They had some pretty interesting options and takes on traditionally non-vegan foods.  Other than the rather slow and unresponsive service, I was pretty happy with the place.  I also got to celebrate with Erik and my girlfriends and Mesa.  I had also been wanting to try this place for a long time.  Strange that I hadn’t been, seeing as their first place, Habana, is one of my usual spots.  It was so cool inside, they have this huge opening in the roof making the modern decor feel more earthy.  The cocktails were unique and delicious, and the food was very tasty.  I definitely recommend it for a fun dinner out spot!

Enough about my celebrations, here are some snaps from the week and weekend…Cheers!!

Breakfast Smoothie

Aaaaaand, here’s my juice for the day, energy boosting and cleansing.

2 apples, 1/2 cucumber, ginger nub, 4 carrots, beet, dandelion root, 3 celery

Juice!

Blendin’ & Juicin’

Ever get overly ambitious at the farmers market or grocery store?  Promise yourself you will be eating more fruit and veggies??  Do you actually end up throwing out or composting a bit of it?  No?  Good for you :-)  Me on the other hand, well I do end up with this problem.  Not anymore!

Other than my copa de vino >>glass of wine<< I do have other beverages that are a MUST on the daily list.  While mi vino does have some benefits, i.e. re-lax-ation and helping the heart, my smoothies and juices are where it’s really at!!  PACKED full of NUTRIENTS, VITAMINS, and MINERALS.

I try to make at least a juice and/or smoothie everyday.   It’s also a great way to sneak in other supplements and vitamins with these beneficial beverages!  BOOM, getting some NUTES into your system...fast and easy while being quite tasty :-)

Freezing fruit that’s on its way out of freshville will later work amazingly in a smoothie.  Last Sunday’s smoothie consisted of strawberries that needed to be used, along with a frozen banana, some almond milk, avocado, and ground flax.  The avocado might sound strange, but it helps thicken and make it creamy while adding protein and healthy fat.  Mixed with the other ingredients, you really won’t be able to taste it (I only used a quarter).

Tossed in a blender and BOOM, nutritionally packed, low-fat, and de-li-cious!!  Such an easy and healthy meal or snack!  Even add some coconut oil, a dash of stevia, agave, or other natural sweetener.

The ground up flaxseed adds TONS of fiber >>aiding in digestion<< high in B vitamins, and is rich in fatty acids.  Buying ground flaxseed at the store can be pricey $$, and since I am ALL about finding more cost efficient ways to be healthy, I recommend buying it in bulk from your local health food store.  It will most likely be in seed form so you will need to grind it up at home (I use a coffee grinder).  It’s not much work and well worth the $$ you will save.

Moving onto to my other fav bev, JUICE! A good juicer can be a pricey investment, but, in my humble opinion, well worth it.  Especially if you are vegan.  Or if you’re a health nut.  Or if you really just want to be able to make fresh juice.  You can look online at HUNDREDS of recipes for juicing combinations, but for me, I just like to pack it full of TONS of FRESH and ORGANIC veggies, then top it off with a little fruit to balance the taste and add some more nutrients and vitamins.

Kale, spinach, chard, celery, carrots, beets, cucumber, lemon, apple, and ginger…pressed through a juicer.  BAM!  The body instantly receives TONS of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.  >>this juice actually served 3 people<<

Try whipping yourself up a fresh smoothie or juice and give your body a loving BOOST of nature’s goodness!! Enjoy!
